      Aug 2010 - May 2013
      Research Assistant, MSc

M.Sc., economic geology focusThesis title: Geology and Paragenesis of the Boseto Copper Deposits, Kalahari Copperbelt, Northwest Botswana -Conducted research focused on delineating the paragenetic history of a Meso- to Neoproterozoic sedimentary rock-hosted stratiform Cu-Ag deposit within the emerging Kalahari Copperbelt. Stratigraphy and depositional environment, structure, ore character, and timing relationships were determined through on-site drill core logging and open-pit observations when available. Petrographic studies focused on delineating mineral paragenesis of ore stage sulfide and alteration minerals as well as minerals related to subsequent metamorphism and remobilization. Carbon, oxygen, and sulfur stable isotopic studies were carried out to place constraints on the origin of carbonate and sulfide minerals. Fluid inclusion studies were utilized to place constraints on the origin and environment of formation of ore bearing veins and shear zones. Re-Os chronometry was employed to place age constraints on the timing of mineralizing and secondary/remobilizing events.-Several deposit specific short courses and field excursions including: sedimentary rock-hosted Cu, epithermal deposits, porphyry deposits (Cu, Au-only, Au-Cu, Cu-Au-Mo), VMS deposits, Cu-Ni-PGE deposits, IOCG deposits, Carlin-type Au deposits, alkaline magmatic deposits-Secretary, CSM Student Chapter of the Society of Economic Geologists-President, CSM Student Chapter of the Society of Economic Geologists: organized bi-monthly speakers, an ArcGIS short course for fund raising, a 1-day symposium on rare earth elements, organized and led an international field trip to the Middle Cauca Belt (Au porphyry) in Colombia.-everything else you expect of a Mines grad! My PhD research utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to understand the tectono-stratigraphic development and inversion of the Meso- to Neoproterozoic Ghanzi Basin in northwest Botswana. The basin is host to significant recent discoveries of sedimentary rock-hosted Cu-Ag deposits of the Kalahari Copperbelt. The first area of analysis involves the investigation of the regional- and district-scale aeromagnetic datasets. Utilizing the second vertical derivative filter in conjunction with borehole stratigraphy, stratigraphic members of the folded and eroded metasedimentary rocks can be confidently mapped in many areas of the basin. Sequence stratigraphic interpretation of the resulting magnetostratigraphy allows for interpretation of shifting depositional environments across the basin, unconformities, and previuosly unidentified structures. These features can be used to interpret important aspects of the original basin configuration and development, including favorable trap sites for mineralizing fluids and equally important hydrocarbons that aided mineralization. When compared with regional gravity datasets, important regional structures, favorable for mineralization, can be identified for future exploration in the belt. The second area of analysis involves U-Pb igneous zircon and U-Pb + Lu-Hf isotopic analysis of detrital zircons to gain a better understanding of the maximum age and likely sediment source regions for different formations within the Ghanzi Group. The final area of analysis involves petrology and Re-Os chronology of molybdenite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite as well as U-Pb chronology of hydrothermal xenotime to understand the timing of mineralization in Kalahari Copperbelt and the role of precursor sulfides and in-situ and mobile hydrocarbons. The combined study paints a 500-million-year history of a basin punctuated by interrelated diagentic and tectonic events that are overprinted by an orogenic phase of mineralization.
