  Within the "Hybrid Membrane" track of the Zurich Heart Project, a number of research groups from various backgrounds were collaborating towards the goal of a novel pulsatile Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) which could carry an autologous layer of living and functional endothelial cells on its interior surface and thus obviate the need for anticoagulative treatement of a patient. My PhD-related research and work within this project were:- The experimental design and set up for a novel test system allowing the exposure of endothelial cells to the biophysical stressors (flow-induced wall shear stress and cyclic deformation) and subsequent evaluation pipelines- The conception, microfabrication (at an ETH-IBM cleanroom facility) and evaluation of a microtexture for sheltering endothelial cells in order to enhance their viability (patent pending)- Coordination and collaboration with other research groups towards the implementation of results and solutions in an animal trial featuring the new VAD prototype (conducted by veterinarians at the German Heart Center in Berlin)- Mentoring of two Master students Show less
