  VEK (Vlaamse Economische Kring) is the official student association of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Ghent University. Together with my colleagues, I was responsible for the campus recruitment at our Faculty. During the academical year, we organised several events where companies were able to introduce themselves to our students or give them workshops with practical knowledge. Furthermore, we took care of the communication and branding opportunities of these companies.

  During my master year I opted for an internship in the audit department of KPMG. During process discussions, supporting test work, stock counts and the preparation of the financial statements, I gained insight into the financial reflection of operational events and the associated risks in sectors such as flooring, panels, insulation, luggage production, production of essential nutrients, and natural medicines.

  I started my career at KPMG after an interesting internship. Looking back at my first weeks, I can say that I have had the opportunity to learn, both in International Standards on Auditing (ISA), accounting standards and in the KPMG way of working.This knowledge enabled me to audit financial figures and annual accounts within industries as flooring, panels, insulation, metallurgy, automotive, food manufacturing, plant breeding, waste collection and concert halls. Furthermore, it provided me reasonable assurance about the true and fair presentation of the financial condition of these companies.A small portfolio of large clients gave me the opportunity to work within a Sarbanes-Oxley (SOx) control environment. Discussing processes, identifying and assessing risks and vulnerabilities and testing and evaluating internal controls required a critical mindset and professional judgment.
