Activities and Societies: Physics Society, Astronomy Society, The Red Cross As an undergraduate I studied physics. I attended lectures in various areas and took part in small research projects. I wrote reports and gave talks on these projects. I studied a range of courses from basic mechanics to quantum theory and I learned experimental techniques, mathematics, statistical analysis and computer programming. Enjoying the experience led me to enrol into a PhD programme.

      Aug 2010 - Mar 2011
      Waitress

CUP is a small independent cafe chain in Glasgow that specialises in fine teas and cupcakes. I worked here as a waitress to supplement my student loan until I needed to give the position up to study for a set of undergraduate exams. My roles involved welcoming customers, advising them on the items on sale, taking orders, serving orders, food preparation, making reservations and keeping the cafe and kitchen clean and tidy.

    • University of Glasgow

      May 2012 - Aug 2012
      Summer Research Student

Various bits and pieces of research from analysing undergraduate feedback surveys and generating collaboration maps to materials characterisation and analytical modelling. I made myself useful whilst preparing for my PhD to begin.

    • University of Glasgow

      Sept 2012 - Jul 2017
      Postgraduate researcher

My thesis contains work in two major research areas:The strength of hydroxide catalysis bonds between non-metallic crystalline solids, which involves exploring various factors that may influence the strength of hydroxide catalysis bonds between pieces of sapphire and between pieces of silicon. This included the effects of using different chemicals to form the bonds, the effects of thermal cycling on bond strength and the effects of bonding surfaces of pieces with different crystalline orientations.Mechanical Q of hydroxide catalysis bonds between sapphire pieces, which involved the development of existing experimental equipment to measure the bond Q for bonds formed between two thin sapphire discs, between room temperature and liquid helium temperatures. This also included finite element analysis in ANSYS to find the resonant modes of such discs. Show less
