  Year in Industry: Civil Engineer

  This was a ‘Year in Industry’ taken in my gap year to gain experience. Duties mainly included designing roads (signage, drainage, safety barrier, kerbs, road markings), first time sewerage schemes, and electricity pylon geotechnical inspections. I was given responsibilities of running projects, supervising teams and contractors, producing drawings and specifications, and going out on site. I also gained a lot of experience in using AutoCAD to produce drawings.

  Duties and responsibilities were largely the same as in my 'Year in Industry' (also at Mott MacDonald in Bristol) - designing highways and first time sewerage schemes.

  ESL Teacher

  Teaching English as a second language to children ranging from age 3 to 11. This involved creating my own material, using textbooks and various other resources to help teach the children. It also required the ability to communicate effectively with people that have a limited knowledge of English.

  Preparing and teaching maths and science lessons (in English) to Vietnamese children aged between 11 and 15. This involves creating exciting and engaging lessons using experiments, videos, games and worksheets. I am also responsible for marking homework and tests, monitoring progress, and liaising with the parents.

  My main responsibilities included steel and reinforced concrete design in a wide range of sectors including industrial, retail, commercial, and student accommodation. I was frequently involved at the detailed design and construction stages, coordinating with Architects, M&E Engineers and Fabricators to ensure a coherent design.
