Co-culture models were developed to culture biofilms with host tissue and immune cells to assess inflammatory outputs. In addition the creation of this model allowed for the testing of novel antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actives to assess their role in modulating host and bacterial responses. This techniques used in this work included protein assays (ELISA), quantitative PCR of cells and bacteria, viability assays, fluorescent, confocal and scanning electron microscopy, FACS, migration assays, biomass assays, cell culture and bacteria culture. This work allowed for a range of scientific skills to be developed including; data analysis, project management, report writing, oral presentations, grant writing and proficiency in office 365. Master of Research Biomedical Sciences

Thesis Title: Potential wound healing properties of marine organisms.Developed both cell biology, and microbiology techniques to investigate the role of novel actives in wound healing. Actives were tested on host tissues, immune cells and common skin bacteria and outcomes assessed including cell proliferation, migration, viability, adhesion and microscopy.
