  This was a summer-long virtual experience. Through the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion I completed collaborative research on African American Maternal Mortality in Washington D.C.'s wards 7 and 8 over seven weeks. I built connections with physicians, community organizations, and mental health professionals involved in mitigating this health disparity. I prepared by gaining exposure and learning to advocate for underserved communities, persisted by addressing Postpartum Care for African-American women through an anti-racism framework, and practiced by addressing bias, microaggressions, and racism. Also, as a fellow, I became comfortable leaning on my personal experiences and background to advance opportunities for populations who lack equitable access to healthcare. Show less
