Rooted in the theories of social integration (Blau, 1960) and social inclusion (Gidley, et al., 2010), this paper aims to address how the structure of the Western canon-based music education system, socially excludes representation of a variety of diverse subgroups within not only teacher training programs, but its effect on the classrooms those teachers one day enter, and also how this same system only integrates groups they have vetted and deemed “safe”. She then goes on to address the work that needs to begin in breaking down this social and systemic hierarchy that exists in music still today Show less
