Preterm birth is the leading cause of newborn death, and babies who survive an early birth often face lifetime health challenges, such as breathing problems, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, and others. The March of Dimes supports efforts to improve the quality of care given to pregnant women by predicting and preventing preterm birth. The March of Dimes does not take a position for or against any initiative to require universal screening of women for cervical length.The March of Dimes advocates for comprehensive newborn screening for all babies in this country, regardless of the state in which they are born. The 31 tests currently recommended by the March of Dimes enable reliable diagnosis of serious conditions for which there is a proven treatment for a newborn’s metabolic disorder, hearing deficiency, or congenital heart condition that can help avoid devastating consequences.
