      Movement Controller

My role in the army was very varied with approximately half my time spent as a movement controller and half as a fitness instructor. As a movement controller I have travelled to various different countries mostly working from airports and was responsible for: briefing large groups of people including high ranking officers as well as dealing with customer problems, organising and planning the most effective and efficient modes of transportation, documenting travel details, liaising with customs, organising accommodation and overseeing the safety of my customers and staff including during hostile events. This would often involve 12 hour shifts 7 days a week (we had 2 teams and needed to cover the airport 24 hours a day). The airport was used by all nationalities including local troops and we also had local interpreters. This helped to gain a better understanding of the muslim culture and assisted me in working in a respectful manner. As a fitness instructor I was responsible for organising and taking lessons. This would involve the project management of sports events as well as everyday lessons. Motivating staff through setting them achievable targets and encouraging them. I spent 6 months training staff who were unable to achieve the standard fitness requirements before moving on to manage the station gym. Show less

      Designated Detention Officer (DDO)

As a DDO I supported the Custody Officer to ensure the rights and entitlements of people detained were protected. A significant part of my role was to manage the needs and rights of people detained, ensuring my actions were in accordance with legislation and MPS guidelines and to complete the relevant paperwork. I regularly interacted with outside agencies including immigration, foreign embassies and Serco. During my time in this role I aimed to be as proactive as the role will allow me; changing working routines and environments. I was regularly working with police constables who have little or no experience in custody. This means that I was constantly training constables in all areas of my job. Being on the receiving end of many abusing detainee’s also helped to create a thick skin. Show less
