      Adelante summer researcher

During my recent summer research project, I had the opportunity to address a critical issue in the engineering world - the shortage of essential soft skills among recent graduates. Traditional engineering programs often fall short in providing real-world problem-solving and experiential learning, leaving graduates without well-rounded skills. To tackle this challenge, I embarked on an exciting journey in the realm of the Internet of Things (IoT).In this project, we harnessed the power of IoT to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset (EM) and foster self-reliance. We defined EM as 'The inclination to discover, evaluate, and exploit opportunities.' Through IoT, a network of interconnected devices and sensors, we tasked ourselves with proposing, planning, designing, and implementing solutions to real-world challenges. We leveraged the innovative Photovoice method, a qualitative learning assessment tool, to capture our experiences. By combining photos with captions and reflections, we gained a deep understanding of our journey. Our project's goal was to create an affordable security system tailored to college students, involving both entrepreneurial and engineering perspectives. The process was challenging yet exhilarating. We traversed the path from ideation to refinement and ultimately brought our ideas to life. This project not only honed our technical skills but also nurtured professional competencies. It underscores the importance of instilling an entrepreneurial mindset in engineering graduates to thrive in the competitive professional landscape. Our findings underscore the value of hands-on, open-ended inquiry activities in cultivating research skills and enhancing self-reliance among engineering graduates. These experiences are crucial in preparing graduates for the ever-evolving workforce. I'm excited to have been part of this journey, and I look forward to applying these skills and insights to future endeavors. Show less
