Activities and Societies: President and founder of Rutgers Chess Club; Rutgers Society of Physics Students; Rutgers Oceanography Club I entered Rutgers undeclared and looking for something that I could be passionate about. Early on I discovered the excitement of physics as well as the amazing marine and coastal sciences department. Early on I discovered the excitement of physics as well as the amazing marine and coastal sciences department. I combined my interests when I declared my major as Ocean Physics and began actively conducting research in radar oceanography. My enthusiasm for this field of study led me to volunteer as a mentor in Topics in Marine Science, to lead a research project in Oceanographic Methods & Data Analysis, and to take many additional graduate courses in oceanography and elective math courses to expand my horizons further. Outside of my major, I continued to study German and worked at the physics lecture hall as a demonstrator. I also revived the Rutgers Chess Club which is now a prominent feature in the northeastern US chess community. Show less

  • Experience

    • Rutgers University

      Sept 2011 - Sept 2015

My research topics included applications of oceanographic radar to measure wave parameters in various sea states and radar operating modes, as well as interactions between hurricanes and the Mid-Atlantic old pool, which culminated in an authorship on the paper "Stratified coastal ocean interactions with tropical cyclones" (Glenn, Miles, Seroka, Xu, Forney, Roarty, Schofield, Kohut, 2016) Conducted original research on advanced methods in radar oceanography with Hugh Roarty: led to publication of "Application of radial and elliptical surface current measurements to better resolve coastal features" in IEEE. Explored the field of estuarine physics with Bob Chant (may lead to future projects hindcasting tides). Found evidence of ahead-of-eye cooling in hurricanes crossing over the Mid-Atlantic Bight (resulting publication pending). Conducted further radar oceanography research funded through RIOS program, funded by NSF. Assisted with demonstrations of physics which are a hallmark of the Rutgers physics department locally and abroad. Operated, constructed, repaired, improved physics demonstrations for university physics classes, and public outreach programs (volunteer basis). Learned to use MATLAB, SeaSonde, and CODAR technologies in radar oceanography applications, funded by the Board of Public Utilities to the end of evaluating the viability of offshore wind energy development. Media librarian. Assisted students and faculty with media such as recording devices, long-playing record players, microfilm, VHS and DVD players, televisions, etc. Maintained order in the music collection.

      May 2014 - Aug 2014
      WHOI Fellow, Summer Student

Research as part of a large experiment conducted by the sediment transport group of U.S.G.S. Woods Hole. My part is mainly to conduct a sub-experiment identifying differences in measurement of ADCP orientation, aiming to improve accuracy of calculations contingent on the orientation of the ADCP relative to waves, currents and bathymetry. Some extraneous experience I have acquired from this work includes shipboard experience deploying instruments aboard the R/V Connecticut, as well as exposure to new research and ideas via multiple series of weekly summer lectures at WHOI.
