  Barrie started his career in January 1984 as an audit article clerk at Arthur Young & Co (now EY). He joined Anglogold Ashanti in 1984, initially in the Finance Department after which he was transferred to Internal Audit in 1989. Barrie was tasked to establish a Contracts Coordinating function in 1992 to address serious control weaknesses experienced at the time with regards to on-site mining contractors. In 1995 he returned to the Internal Audit Department as a senior internal auditor and founded Pro Optima Audit Services in 1997. Barrie has 6 years of financial accounting and 30 years of internal audit experience in the mining industry, both within South Africa and internationally. He identified the need for operational audits in the mining industry and decided in 1997 to start his own business as a contract management consultant whereby he performed audits of a technical nature on a success fee basis – the first client being DRDGOLD. The astounding results of these audits prompted DRDGOLD to approach him to submit a proposal for establishing a complete Internal Audit function. Pro Optima is still the appointed internal auditors after 23 years.Barrie subsequently approached other mining groups to perform operational audits on a success fee, i.e. to prove Pro Optima’s capabilities with regards to operational auditing. The audit results were above expectation and had resulted in Pro Optima being awarded contracts for performing audits at Gold Fields/ Sibanye Gold (since 2002) and Anglogold Ashanti (2003), Lonmin Platinum (since 2008), Gold1 (2011), Village Main Reef (2014), Omnia Holdings (2015), Sibanye Platinum (2018), Guinea Alumina Corporation (2019) and Impala Platinum (2020).
