I gained experience as a bacterium strain development scientist. During my summer placement I had the opportunity organise and run a research project looking at the effects of the repeated use of media components had on bacterium as a more sustainable approach in culturing bacteria. Part of this project involved the creation of new assay protocols following laboratory health and safety procedures including the use microplate analysis. My second Research project looked at the effect of room temperature had on bacterial broth for Downstream transport and processing by measuring rate of cell lysis over time. Both projects involved calculating and synthesising specialised media in different concentrations. Detailed online laboratory books were used to collaborate and communicate with my supervisor specific protocols in my projects. The projects involved extensive data recording and checking utilising various equipment including centrifuges, incubators, spectrophotometers, colony pickers, PCR machines and gel electrophoresis systems. I ensured smooth laboratory operations by managing inventory through tracking laboratory consumables with frequent calibration of equipment. Show less
