As a resident I was posted in the department of general surgery, in which I used to see around 100 patients per week, operate/assist 15 elective and 20 emergency cases per week and also look after them in the ward and ICU. The general surgery department has daily OPDs and daily elective OTs, performing around 70-80 major surgeries a month. Show less Super speciality - 3 years full time superspeciality degree course in Trauma Surgery & Critical CareThese 3 years of my life were dedicated to my passion of undertaking a specialised training in the field of trauma surgery. I got into this degree course in AIIMS by appearing in an all India DM/MCh entrance examination in which I stood first in the country.I was posted at the JPN Apex Trauma Centre, which is a 1000 bedded dedicated trauma centre associated with the 3500 bedded AIIMS super speciality hospital, New Delhi. During my tenure I was rotated for 6 months in Neurotrauma (where I did OPD, IPD, ICU and I operated/assisted around 40 craniotomies), 6 months in Orthopedics (where learnt to apply an external fixator, learnt amputations) and 2 months in Maxillofacial surgery (learnt mandibular fixations, bridle wiring, MMF). The rest of the tenure was dedicated to the Trauma Surgery Unit itself, performing Damage Control Laparotomy, Thoracotomy, Vascular Repair, Cardiac Repair, Rib fixation, Neck Exploration, and managing all kinds of polytrauma patients in the emergency department, wards and the ICU. As a resident it was my duty to take complete and holistic care of all trauma patients, starting from when the arrived in the emergency till their discharge and even follow them up till they were rehabilitated and were put back to the society.
