      I attended Victoria University from 2012 to 2015. During this time I studied mostly biology and environmental science papers, but also completed courses in statistics, environmental studies, psychology and philosophy.       I started working for the Wellington City Council as pool lifeguard in March 2010. My primary responsibilities included pool supervision, responding to incidents & emergencies, providing safety information, facility cleaning & maintenance, equipment maintenance, chemical testing & handling, retail, cash handling, and banking.Wellington City Council's pool lifeguards have a very strong safety culture. I am trained in advanced first aid, and hold a current Pre-Hospital-Emergency-Care qualification (expiry Jan 2018) issued by St. John, which includes unit standards 25411, 25412 and 14473. These first aid skills are practiced often, with regular in-house training reviews and emergency simulations.I have also completed additional staff training courses provided by the Wellington City Council, including:• WCC Serious incident management course• WCC Defibrillator/oxygen course• WCC Excellent customer service course• WCC Safe chemical handling course• WCC Water testing courseI was also twice selected to compete at the National Lifeguard Games, in which teams from around New Zealand compete in a series of lifeguard-related challenges including swimming events, first aid skills, emergency situations, lifeguard trivia and more. It is run through Facebook, and is the largest New Zealand Facebook group ever created, with over 150,000 members signed up. My main role in Vic Deals was B2B sales (of online advertising), and managing community content. However, I also navigated all stages of business development, including the startup, growth, and maturity phases of the company. Further, I gained experience in marketing, social media, IP protection, staff management, business negotiations, and more. In 2017 I had a successful exit to new owners/investors and learned the tax, accounting and legal requirements of business sales. Show less

      Research Assistant - Summer Scholarship

      In October 2015 I was awarded a Summer Research Scholarship by Victoria University of Wellington, to assist with research at Victoria University's Coastal Ecology Laboratory (VUCEL). This research investigated feeding behaviour and morphology differences of the Common Triplefin (Forsterygion lapillum) in relation to disturbance. The work involved a strong field-work component, with extensive scuba diving, snorkelling, transect & quadrat work, boating, underwater photography and use of 4WD vehicles. I also gained experience in otolith extraction, morphological analysis and developing experimental design. Show less

      Sir Peter Blake Trust - Marine Ambassador

      In 2015 I was selected by the Sir Peter Blake Trust as a NIWA Marine Science Ambassador, to assist with NIWA's research relating to NZ fisheries, biodiversity and seabed geology onboard RV Tangaroa. The Sir Peter Blake Trust supports scientific research, conservation, teamwork and leadership development in young New Zealanders.This research assistant position involved a three-week trip around the Chatham Rise investigating the pelagic food web using trawls and plankton nets. Work included fish & invertebrate identification, processing, sorting and storing. I also gained experience in plankton fractioning, MOCNESS trawl analysis, sediment core deployment and sediment sample slicing. Show less

      In February 2016 I joined MPI's Graduate Development Programme, which involves three 6-month rotations working in different areas of the Ministry for Primary Industries. I was fortunate to be selected as 1 of 10 successful candidates from over 750 applicants.My first rotation was in the Intelligence, Planning & Coordination (IPC) directorate, working in the National Operations Centre. During this time, I responded to biological and trade emergencies of national significance using the Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS). I also monitored global biosecurity trends, and helped develop situational awareness tools for the National Operations Centre.My second rotation was in MPI's Business Technology & Information Systems directorate where I helped in establishing a range of technology-related solutions to the problems faced by MPI, including the use of geospatial management tools, underwater ROVs (remotely operated vehicles), sonar technology, X-ray systems, and near-infrared spectroscopy. I also completed courses in Agile software development and Microstrategy (a business intelligence tool for data visualisations).My third rotation was in MPI's Sector Strategy Team, where I helped to develop strategies underpinning New Zealand’s policy approach to precision agriculture, AgriTech, synthetic biology, plant variety rights and more. I also learned the fundamentals of Government policies, processes, decision making, and spending. Show less

      After selling my first business (Vic Deals), I travelled throughout Australia, Fiji, Niue, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, USA, and Costa Rica for 10 months, before moving to live in Singapore for work.Some favourite moments included scuba diving in Niue with sharks and humpback whales, skiing between trees in Salt Lake City (Utah), exploring the biggest caves in Laos on a wooden canoe, and riding dirtbikes through the jungle in Costa Rica.
