Manage 45 people who work on two very different aspects of environmental protection. One group evaluates large scale projects(mines, High Speed Rail, roadway projects) for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The team provides recommendations to project proponents on ways to improve long term environmental outcomes in the areas of sustainability, ecological mitigation and climate change. Due the large scale of these projects, small improvements can dramatically decrease future negative environmental impacts and supports smart growth and development. The group evaluates environmental data and outcomes to improve EPA's ability to work with sectors that struggle with environmental compliance and in particular focus our limited resources on those areas where the highest environmental benefit can be achieved. Show less Led a team of 15 people with varied backgrounds with the goal of identifying, prioritizing and obtaining funding for investigation and clean up of over 500 abandoned uranium mines on Indian Lands. These mines are a relic of the cold war and pose a high radiological risk to residents who live close to abandoned mines and even use debris from these mines to build their homes. While managing this team we identified the 50 riskiest mines, assessed 10 of them, cleaned up over 40 contaminated homes and began a long-term clean up planning for all 500 mines. Show less Project manager for several large Superfund sites - focusing primarily on former military bases. Led teams which included project managers, toxicologist and hydrogeologists from Department of Defense, EPA and environmental consultants to ensure land and groundwater was properly investigated for contamination. Following the evaluation, we determined appropriate cleanup technologies and values in order to support future reuse. One major project was the former Marine Corps Air Station Orange County, CA. The base is now well on its way to being developed as mixed reuse benefitting the surrounding community. Show less
