      Assistant Curator of Education

As the Assistant Curator of Education, I planned and implemented programming for school and adult tour groups who wished to visit the historic properties and museums in the County of Henrico. This entailed giving evening lectures at libraries, presenting outreach programs to school groups, planning special events at historic sites, organizing symposiums dealing with historic topics of interest, and researching and designing interpretative exhibitions for display throughout the County. I specifically curated the exhibition entitled "Ready to do My Part: Henrico County and World War I," which opened to the public in 2010. Show less

      Independent Historian

As an independent historian I have published two books and a scholarly essay. For each of these works I performed extensive independent research. My first book, The Battle of New Market Heights: Freedom Will Be Theirs by the Sword was the first book to chronicle the first battle in which African American foot soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor. The book received a positive review in the Journal of Southern History. In the review, Dr. Paul E. Coker of the University of Tennessee stated: "This slim volume offers considerable insight regarding the black military experience...While some readers may dread wading into a detailed battle history, this book's clear writing style, inclusion of dozens of photographs and maps, and relevance to broader historical themes make it accessible for a general audience and worth consideration for undergraduate courses."My second foray into publishing as an independent historian was a recently-published essay in Dr. Edward G. Lengel's collection of essays, _A Companion to the Meuse-Argonne Campaign_ (2014). The essay, entitled "Storming the Heights of the Meuse: The 29th and 33d Divisions Fight for Control of the High Ground, 8-16 October" examined a lesser-known portion of the Meuse-Argonne Campaign. My second book, _The Battle of First Deep Bottom_, is the first book to examine an overlooked portion of Grant's Third Offensive of the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign during the American Civil War. I was the Site Manager for Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park and Ben Lomond Historic Site. I also managed site historic artifact collections, ensuring compliance with guidelines for interpretation, security and maintenance procedures. I assisted in the management of collections registration and cataloging in accordance with the procedures and the guidance put forth in County regulations. I supervised employees involved in implementing operational decisions on projects, programs, resources protection, and public use of a County historic site. For this position I also performed independent research and prepared lectures as assigned. I gave presentations to professional organizations, schools, and civic groups on various historical subjects. I also actively engaged in various professional development activities with local, state, and national museum organizations such as the Virginia Association of Museums, the Historic House Consortium of Washington D.C., and the American Historical Association.
