  At the Physiotherapy Department I was employed as the clinical coordinator for almost three years. My job description entailed the logistical administration of placements, planning workshops for clinical supervisors and performing research in the clinical education arena. In addition, I taught a few modules on a second and third year level.

  My doctoral studies focused on traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) as a public health issue, in that these injuries cause considerable functioning issues and impose an enormous financial burden. Because of these impacts primary prevention remains key. My thesis investigated the epidemiology of TSCI in South Africa and Sweden in order to impact primary prevention initiatives but also to assist with the allocation of health and rehabilitation resources needed to address the problems associated with injuries of this kind. In addition, my thesis examined the functioning of persons with TSCI within the current healthcare context, and the results from this perspective could be used to augment healthcare services to better respond to the unmet needs of clients.
