      I was a Member of Parliament in South Africa for just under nine years. During this time I served as the Shadow Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs from May 2009 to Feb 2013. The committees I served on during my time in Parliament included: Portfolio Committee (PC) of Environmental Affairs & Tourism (April 2004 to June 2006 & Aug 2007 to April 2009), the PC of Health (July 2006 to July 2007) & the PC of Water and Environmental Affairs (May 2009 to Feb 2013). Legislation that I worked on included the Air Quality Act, the Waste Act, the Integrated Coastal Management Act, the National Environmental Management Amendment Act, the Tobacco Products Amendment Act, the Protected Areas Amendment Act and the Foodstuffs & Cosmetics Amendment Act. From April 2004 to June 2005 I served as Parliamentary Counsellor to the Leader of the Opposition. Show less

Some of the projects included the writing of best practice case studies on local government, running capacity building workshops on environmental topics for councillors and mayors, approval and evaluation of grants, and the drafting and reviewing of performance management protocols.       I led the re-organisation of the former Department of Trade and Investment into the new Department of Enterprise and Investment, inclusive of new functions and mandates in pursuit of positioning Cape Town as a forward-looking, globally competitive business city.In addition I aligned the department's work against strategic priorities of the organisation as a whole, and monitored and reported on performance across the Department. I led several investment promotion activities with incoming foreign delegations, and was the organiser of the 2016 World Energy Cities AGM, hosted in Cape Town.       I lead a directorate of 350 team members that supports the metropolitan government in short, medium and long-term strategy and policy development, capital planning, performance management, risk management, corporate communications, leadership development and business improvement. The Directorate has advanced project and programme management capabilities and regularly leads transversal work and builds responses to external shock events for the purpose of ensuring business continuity.I serve on the Executive Management Team of the organisation, and report quarterly to the Audit and Performance Audit Committee.Other assignments include:* Municipal Electoral Officer for Cape Town - I am the lead liaison with the Independent Electoral Commission for South Africa.* Chairperson of the Core Application Refresh Steering Committee* Chairperson on the POPIA Incident Response Committee* Chairperson of the Community of Practice and Advisory Committee in Respect of Partnerships and Collaboration Show less Responsible for embedding resilience thinking into a variety of City governance processes. I led the process to develop Cape Town's first Resilience Strategy, approved by Council in August 2019. I was a member of the steering committee of the Water Resilience Programme set up to respond to drought crisis. Led the first ever in-city deployment of the City Water Resilience Approach in 2019. Led two work streams in the City of Cape Town's Covid-19 response, including Chairing the Pandemic Business Continuity Coordinating Committee. I led the drafting and compilation of this report. It followed a benchmarking exercise in early 2022, which was used to highlight areas for improvement. These areas were subsequently acted upon.

      COVID-19 Dynamic Operations Framework - Winner in the Industry & Public Service - Local category Institute of Risk Management South Africa Awards Nov 2020 This award was won for the novel COVID-19 Dynamic Operations Framework developed in the early stages of the pandemic by a small team of City of Cape Town officials, in order to manage the complex systems under stress as a result of both the pandemic and the suppression methods used to contain / manage infections. I was responsible for drafting the long form strategy based on the conceptual framework, and played the leading role in updating the component parts of the framework on a weekly basis.… Show more This award was won for the novel COVID-19 Dynamic Operations Framework developed in the early stages of the pandemic by a small team of City of Cape Town officials, in order to manage the complex systems under stress as a result of both the pandemic and the suppression methods used to contain / manage infections.
