      Housing Advocate

In this role I supported young people who had been discharged from The Department of Human Services and the foster care system to navigate the homeless continuum of care in Philadelphia and obtain housing through a variety of transitional housing providers. I would assist youth in all the necessary leg work and documentation as they would move from homelessness, to shelter, to temporary then permanent housing. I advocated for individuals and for systems change while balancing documentation and providing emotional support to hundreds of youth every month. I conducted education seminars on maintaining an apartment, housing rights, and communicating effectively with landlords, represented Valley Youth House at the Continuum of Care meetings with the City of Philadelphia, and participated in the Point in Time Counts of homeless individuals. In this position I focused on housing policy issues which effect people living with mental health conditions. I wrote testimony delivered at Philadelphia's City Hall speaking to the proposed ban on meal sharing in Philadelphia's public parks, co-chaired the City of Philadelphia's Youth Point in Time Count, presented at The Housing Alliance of PA's Homes Within Reach Conference, and planned and found grant funding for a one day symposium on youth homelessness at Temple University.
