As a doctoral researcher at UC Berkeley, I planned, financed, and carried out a multi-year research project on the history of Japan and West Germany’s commercial nuclear power programs, with emphases on intellectual, technological, and social history as well as the continuities between the wartime and postwar periods. I conducted the project using Japanese and German-language materials from numerous archives and libraries throughout Japan, Germany, and the United States. I wrote and delivered oral presentations on my research at over a dozen different workshops, conferences, and public presentations in Germany, Japan, France, and the United States, and won numerous grants and fellowships from universities, international research institutions, and state agencies. Show less I taught six university courses as a graduate student instructor or as an independent instructor. These courses broadly covered modern German history, Japanese history, Chinese history, the history of nuclear energy, and the history of the Second World War. In my capacity as an instructor, I liaised with professors regarding learning objectives; led weekly discussion and seminar sections for up to fifty students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds; helped students comprehend complex course material; assisted students in developing research papers; provided students with timely feedback on their work; and mentored many students who have gone on to pursue advanced degrees in the humanities, social sciences, and other professions. I completed teacher training courses, live teaching assessments, and two university-sponsored certificate programs in higher education pedagogy. Show less

I mentored advanced high school students as they pursued research projects in history. I helped these students plan and create their projects, introduced them to primary sources and relevant scholarship, and advised them on how to write and revise college-level history papers. Many of these projects focused on the history of the Second World War, Japanese, German, and Chinese history, and the history of nuclear energy.
