  Project Engineer

  During this six-month internship, I was tasked with designing a hydraulic mounting press for metallographic samples. I successfully completed this task through a three-phased project. In thefirst phase of the project, I analysed and then reverse-engineered in workshop a pre-existing devicewith similar functionalities. This allowed me to identify the functions and criticalities of each part and sub-part of the device. In the second phase of the project, I undertook a literature review in both English and Italian of academic papers and technical documentation, so as to identify trends and lessons learned in relevant fields. This then helped me develop innovative solutions for designing an improved press, especially as regards the cooling and locking systems of the device. In the third and last phase of the project, I finalized the design for the improved hydraulic mountingpress through SolidWorks, a CAD software.As part of this internship, I also assisted the company'sprocurement process for materials and devices, acting as liaison point for suppliers and commercialpartners.Overall, thanks to this internship, I became fully proficient in the use of CAD software, especially SolidWorks. Furthermore, the extensive literature review undertaken in English andItalian and the commercially-viable re-designing of the device demonstrate the extent of mylinguistic and analytical skills. Lastly, as I worked underlimited oversight throughout my internship,this experience stands also as a proof of my ability to work independently and to take responsibilityfor my areas of work, delivering assigned work according to deadlines and to high standards.   During this internship I was tasked with the designing of a sample transfer system; aim of this device is to move samples treated with non-thermal plasma from a treatment reactor to a XPS machine for analyzing, all the while maintaining high-vacuum conditions. In a first phase I undertook a series of interviews with researchers of the department and a literature review of academic papers and technical documentation, in order to identify trends and lessons learned in relevant fields, particularly regarding non-thermal plasma technology and Ultra-High-Vacuum engineering.In a second phase, I analysed and reverse-engineered in workshop pre-existing devices which were to constitute part of the final system, in order to identify functions and criticalities. In a third phase, I designed the global system through SolidWorks, developing a series of innovative solutions for the most critical subparts of the transfer system, particularly the clamping device and the electric power supply system..As part of this internship, I also assisted the company's procurement process for materials and devices, acting as liaison point for suppliers and commercial partners. Overall, thanks to this internship, I became fully proficient in the use of CAD software, especially SolidWorks. Furthermore, the extensive literature review undertaken in English and the commercially-viable re-designing of the device demonstrate the extent of mylinguistic and analytical skills.
