    • Indiana University School of Medicine

      May 2011 - Jul 2012
      Medical Researcher

The study used a rodent model to examine the influence of fetal genotype as a determinant of vulnerability to ethanol exposure. We analyzed the severity of altered gene expression due to differing lengths of exposure to ethanol. Using immunohistochemisty, we found results differed in specific proteins between alcohol v non-alcohol treated embryos. We also analyzed canonical pathways of proteins involved in differing epigenetic alterations. I realized that without research, clinical physicians would not be able to heal patients. I gained another level of respect for those who research but I also confirmed my desire to work in the field of public health. Research published: “Implications of genomic signatures in the differential vulnerability to fetal alcohol exposure in C57BL/6 and DBA/2 mice”, by Amy C. Lossie, Chiao-Ling Lo, William Muir, Floyd Timm, Yunlong Liu, Whitney Gray and Feng C. Zhou*, published in “Frontiers in Epigenomics and Epigenetics”. Show less

    • Indiana Cancer Consortium

      Nov 2013 - May 2015
      Regional Cancer Control Coordinator

The Indiana Cancer Consortium (ICC) is the only statewide cancer coalition in Indiana whose mission is to reduce the cancer burden in the state through the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive cancer control plan. To further its mission, the ICC developed community-based regional coalitions after identifying higher cancer incidence rates from geographic information system maps. As the ICC Regional Coalition Coordinator, I improved local engagement in comprehensive cancer control planning and implementation through identifying the burden of cancer on a local level. I also provided guidance on evidence-base practices to influence local cancer control initiatives that took place at hospitals, community health centers, and local cancer support groups. Show less

    • Eskenazi Health

      Jan 2014 - May 2015
      Prenatal Care Researcher

Working with pregnant women in disadvantaged populations. Research on how cultural beliefs regarding perinatal care vary between first and second-generation immigrants and how that, in turn, impacts mother and infant health outcomes. Through key informant interviews, discovered that cultural beliefs and the degree of social support received during and after pregnancy positively correlates to both the infant and maternal outcome. After the program development phase, I was responsible for devising and implementing information systems to monitor progress as well as developing promotional material to educate stakeholders about the group prenatal care program and to encourage future mothers to join. Due to demonstrated improved fetal and maternal outcomes, stakeholder support, and the amount of mothers wanting to participate, the program was implemented across the Indianapolis healthcare system.
