Distinction Art & Design Foundation Course Distinction

My FMP was inspired by a trip to Kentucky. I fell in love with the traditional quilting techniques that were on display all around me. I used this experience along with research into modern art quilts to illustrate my visit. I printed all the fabric, handmade the appliqué parts and quilted the piece. I displayed it on a 'barn' which is how they were displayed amongst the horse farms in Kentucky.

      Retail

My most recent full time position was in retail as part of ‘Team Newmarket!’ I worked with the general public daily and offered the best possible customer service, through optical and product knowledge, as well as my sales techniques. This new knowledge had to be acquired at a very quick pace to ensure I could meet targets. I was also trained as a contact lens specialist, learning the in depth knowledge, to understand this alternative option to eyewear. I tutored patients on the correct practise of the optical lens, as well as the administration side; ordering prescribed lenses to store, setting up direct debit schemes and maintaining relations with the store’s contact lens wearers. On the arrival of a patient, I would guide them through the pre screening routine and pass the results onto the optometrist. This would include taking retinal photographs, a prescription reading using an auto-refractor and testing of visual fields. On completion of the sight test, I assisted the patient with frame selection. Using my fashion interest, I kept up to date with key styles and was especially keen to promote the fashionable frames. Once a decision was made, I was at a level of experience to dispense single vision spectacles. I also attended training courses in Norwich. Show less

      Culture and Travel Experience

After studying for many years, I decided to go on a world tour as a reward and used the opportunity to research other cultures. To achieve this I had to:• Raise the money• Research and plan the trip – flights and airline routes to destinations• Research places to visit – points of interest and activities• Prepared myself with the suitable equipment to collect research information for future design projects – camera, sketch book, scrap book, set up a blog• Effective use of time - in between each flight – make sure I did everything there was to do, plus anything else that was unexpected• Tackle conversing with different languages and culture – people, transport (taxis, buses, trains, ferries/boats), accommodation, signs/maps/roads, markets, currencies• Budget Show less

As an integral role in the PMO I provided a robust planning & control service by maintaining integrated project schedules using Project Server. This secures the project baseline and monitors change that supports our progress and variance reporting. I unndertake and coordinate the formal update of project schedules, milestones, resource allocations, budgets and financial status of all projects on a monthly basis and update data is project server to provide the business/stakeholders with regular updates on financial, workload and delivery forecasts. My responsibility is to support the portfolio managers by ensuring that all reporting requirements and project server updates are done in a timely manner, that all data is reviewed and validated to ensure data integrity and to be available to support them in all meetings and reviews as required. I visited sites in San Jose, CA and Plantation, FL to globalise the project management office (PMO) within the company. I am now controlling delivery of Agile projects in both the UK and US using schedules in Microsoft Project to monitor the allocation of resources, the costs and budgets. I work closely with the project teams to understand the status of projects, allocation of resources and finance to ensure our reported costs align. The company has recently acquired a new business in California and so I am supporting the merge of the Project Management Offices.Due to the globalisation of the company, I have, and continue, to support more senior members of staff in the USA too. The additional growth from the acquisition has required that I reach out to new people who are unfamiliar with the company's processes and understand how to develop our ways of working to become a successful global business. One part of my now, expanded remit that I really enjoy is being able to see the bigger picture. Instead of overseeing one product-line I now understand and track interdependencies between products, releases over all locations Show less
