The hypothesis is that resident stem cells are found in the layers of the vascular lumen which are signalled into activation in the occurrence of damage or injury. Using specific antibodies to precipitate a stem cell epigenetic signature, this determined if the stem cells differentiated into the cells found in the diseased vessels. Show less

I transfected epithelial cells with zinc finger nucleases to create a site specific double stranded breaks which induces homologous recombination in the aim to integrate a green fluorescent protein sequence into the genome. Therapeutically this could be used to reintroduce a sequence into the genome to prevent disease causing deletions for example cystic fibrosis Show less

    • University College Cork, Ireland (UCC)

      Jun 2010 - Sept 2010
      Research Internship

Here I was awarded a summer scholarship from the Physiology Society in the United Kingdom to carry out research for Cystinosis Ireland. This required a great deal of background research and planning. I then took a cell based approach using transfected epithelial cells with a sequence specific transformed plasmid. I used all my findings to help develop my final year project.

    • Children's Medical Research Institute

      Sept 2012 - Feb 2013
      Research Intern

As a member of the drug development team my main role was to carry out GTPase assays to test the efficiency of the newly developed compounds. I carried out cell based analysis which included measuring the compounds effects on endocytosis. I analysed all my results and compiled them into a regular detailed reports. Every week I attended a laboratory group meeting and every third week I was required to present my progress, results, any obstacles and my future plans. At the group meetings I also participated in the group’s journal club where I critically reviewed the presented paper and debated the valid and invalid points. One of the most valuable skills I learned here is the ability to take a step back from a problem and analysing from another angle. Show less

      Sept 2014 - Sept 2015
      Internship

Learned, developed and perfected molecular skills and techniques acquired during my academic career. Responsibilities and experiments carried out included:Cell culture Transfection and Transformation Polymerase Chain Reaction Growth and Storage of Bacterial Plasmid StocksLuciferase Assay Flow Cytometry Chromatin Immunoprecipitation Bioinformatics

    • Trinity College Dublin

      Oct 2015 - Sept 2018
      PhD in Pharmacology

My PhD project involves the investigation into the involvement of the protein phosphatase, PP2A, in the Brain Microvasculature. My study focuses on the permeability of Human Brain Microvascular Endothelial cells to determine a functional role of PP2A and it's interaction and effects on junctional proteins. Protein phosphorylation is a highly regulated process and is essential for controlling protein functions. The studentship also involves assisting the 2nd year Pharmacology course coordinator. It requires me to host Pharmacology Tutorials to students studying Medicine. Show less

      Oct 2018 - Sept 2019
      Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Worked on a drug development study in collaboration with an industry partner. Using mAbs to target a protein involved in cancer cell migration in multiple myeloma cancer types. This study has been carried out on cell lines to patient samples and an in vivo mouse model.
