Nov 2019 - nowThe Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is completing construction and leading the startup and commissioning of more than 20 facilities to safely treat nuclear waste at the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. The waste that will be fed to WTP comes from 177 large underground storage tanks that contain approximately 55 million gallons of radioactive and hazardous waste remaining from the legacy nuclear weapons program. The WTP mission is urgent since more than one-third of the 177 underground storage tanks have already leaked, contaminating the subsurface and threatening the nearby Columbia River. The WTP will use vitrification technology to transform the incoming liquid waste into glass forms inside stainless steel canisters. In this glass form, the waste is stable and impervious to the environment, and its radioactivity will safely dissipate over time. While vitrification has been employed successfully at other radioactive waste clean-up sites, it has never been attempted at the scale of or on waste as complex as that stored at Hanford. The WTP Project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging clean-up projects.
