    • Sharif University of Technology

      Jul 2011 - Oct 2013
      Graduate Research Assistant

My research (under Dr. Tajrishy’s supervision) focused upon sustainable development in urban areas by LID/BMP tools, and development of a computational model in Virtual Basic Microsoft Excel to support design of permeable pavements. The permeable pavement design model (PPDM) makes use of four modules of structural, hydrologic, economic, and qualitative to evaluate and propose the site selection of a permeable pavement system in parking lots and roads sides, given an engineer choices. In 2016, I presented my software as “Development of a Permeable Pavement Design Model in Runoff Reduction and Pollutant Removal Prediction: Application to a Highly Urbanized Area, Tehran, Iran” at the World Environmental and Water Resources Congress in West Palm Beach, FL.In 2014, prior to coming to Virginia Tech, I coauthored a presentation for the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) Annual Water Resources Conference in Tyson’s Corner, VA, and entitled “Investigation of the Effectiveness of Landscape Improvement on Downstream Flow Hydrograph at Different Return Periods” Show less

    • ASCE/Virginia Tech

      Mar 2016 - Aug 2017
      ASCE SWMM Workshop Instructor

I served as instructor in two SWMM workshops in collaboration with ASCE and Virginia Tech, that were held in Charlottesville and Virginia Beach, in March 2016 and August 2017, respectively. Our target audience were engineers, scientists, planners, and regulators who have the responsibility of designing stormwater control measures (SCMs) and/or implementing watershed improvement programs.

    • Virginia Tech

      Aug 2016 - Dec 2017

I worked on thermal evaluation of urbanized watersheds as a GRA at Virginia Tech. using a coupled hybrid approach. I began developing a SWMM model from scratch of the Stroubles Creek watershed, Blacksburg, Virginia using Town of Blacksburg and Virginia Tech Physical Facility information. In addition to the SWMM model, I developed a thermal model called MINUHET with the aim of simulating streamflow temperature and utilizing thermal mitigation approaches at the watershed scale. I have been interested in assessing the urban development on thermal processes of urbanized watersheds through computational models of SWMM and MINUHET. My research mainly lied on investigation of aquatic lives habitats exposed to large volume of heat loads; and mitigate the urbanization/climate change effects through utilizing stormwater control measures (SCMs) and watershed-scale practices.I also assisted in development and calibration of an HSPF model of the Stroubles Creek watershed, and further developed a Hybrid approach of SWMM and HSPF models to improve the streamflow simulation. Show less I served as a GTA for three semesters at Biological Systems Engineering department of Virginia Tech, and assisted in several subject areas, including numerical methods and programming. During the first semester, I was TA of “engines and power trains” which was a lab-based undergrad-level course and I had office hours to assist students. During second and fourth semesters, due to my proficiency in MATLAB, I was TA of the undergrad-level course of Numerical Methods under supervision of Dr. Scott and Dr. Senger; I had office hours to assist students on employing MATLAB in numerical methods subject. Sept 2017 - Dec 2017
      Water Resources Engineering Intern

During the last semester of my study at VT, I worked at the City of Virginia Beach Stormwater Planning Division as an intern. Our main current project was focused on flood management at coastal and floodplains of Virginia Beach exposed to Chesapeake Bay through evaluation of worst-case scenarios of sea level rise, storm surges, and rainfall-runoff patterns. We were looking for suitable specifications of drainage networks to control hazards on urban infrastructure, through a couple of calibrated SWMM models for Virginia Beach. Furthermore, I assisted in finding the specifications of stormwater drainage network and urban infrastructure through reviewing the old roadway plans and cross-sections. I also designed a pump station at the downgradient of a pond in Virginia Beach through a calibrated SWMM model. Show less
