I did my research at the University of Queensland in conjunction with the Queensland Brain Institute, and at the Lizard Island Research Station, Australia. My work centres on neurobiology and visual ecology, more specifically on the evolutionary psychology of colour in the marine environment. I studied the visual system of a reef predator to deduce colour and contrast interactions in the complex tropical coral reef environment. My work provided the first evidence that a commonly used visual model does not apply to a typical reef fish (Rhinecanthus aculeatus). Also, I provided evidence for a longstanding hypothesis that animals with highly contrasting edge profiles can theoretically increase their detectability by triggering their viewer’s cognitive mechanism of edge detection. Activities and Societies: Field studies in rural East Africa on the Ugandan Red Colobus, in Kibale National Park. To learn about our species and the different ways we have lived. Brought an interdisciplinary perspective to my largely life sciences-oriented background. My independent research focused on facial fluctuating asymmetry as a marker for stress in the Ugandan Red Colobus (Procolobus tephrosceles).I used precise measurements to determine the level of facial asymmetry in different populations of an endangered monkey species, in order to predict stress due to habitat fragmentation.
