The importance of the LMP3 monocoque torsional stiffness for racing proposes is explained. In order to obtain an approximated value of it a finite element analysis of the LMP3 monocoque structure is performed. A further understanding of the most sensitive components in the original structure is performed. Using shell element forces and moments the most loaded panels in local shear, bending and torsion were identified. With an optimizer solver tool, the local stiffness of a characteristic sandwich laminate is maximized with different optimization criteria. Several steps to obtain an optimal solution for the tub laminate design are taken until the value of 20 kNm/º for torsional stiffness is obtained. The final result gathers the improvement in the tub and in the roll cage leading to 61% of torsional stiffness improvement with respect to the baseline assembly. Show less
