My role at the One Health Institute (OHI) is to help develop teams, build foundations, and create systems necessary for leading the successful implementation of premier global health, research, and development programs. These programs are funded by multiple US Government Agencies including USAID, NIH, DTRA, DARPA, USFWS and by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). As senior manager, a day in the life involves integrating technical and operational teams, communicating across cultures and disciplines with partners in over 20 countries, responding to challenges and identifying ethical and cost effective solutions. Based at the University of California, my work also involves grant writing and capture management, teaching and mentoring students, leading and conducting independent research, and publishing and presenting findings to the global community we serve. As technical director for the world's largest global network of universities in the US, Africa, and Southeast Asia, I have the privilege to collaborate and innovate with brilliant scientists leveraging the strengths of universities to develop the workforce needed for national and global health security. For over 5 years, we developed the networks capacities for growth and sustainability, diversifying funding portfolios and generating revenue, leading to over 200 new partnerships across 20 countries. Our education and workforce training programs (including over 2,000 project-derived materials and products) have reached over 60,000 individuals from 90+ countries. We designed and launched the world's first One Health Workforce Academy (now with sister academies in Africa and Southeast Asia), which offers 16 online courses to 5,000+ enrolled learners supporting competency-based training and education in health challenges and pandemic prevention. Lead project manager for a unique Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)-funded initiative (under their Disease X programme) that aims to expand the UC Davis "SpillOver" database to identify virus families most likely to emerge as the next Disease X with pandemic potential. In this role I lead communications, implementation, change management, and performance monitoring in collaboration with the infectious disease and data science teams. SpillOvers is applying artificial intelligence to integrate risk factors and data to help scientists identify viral families most likely to jump from animals to people and single out those most likely to cause human disease. Together with CEPI, we aim to use these data to inform and prioritize investments in vaccine library and Disease X R&D programmes, helping to further compress vaccine development timelines.
