      BA Spanish Literature

Activities and Societies: Foster House, Choir, College Bowl, Studied abroad summer 1987: Xalapa Mexico, Dean's List once Very much enjoyed the chance to study Spanish and Latin American literature. Made friends for life as an undergrad. The basic sciences were tough, but the liberal arts degree was worth the effort. The football team and basketball teams struggled mightily while I was in school. It was also very cold then. My final paper was on Pancho Villa which was fascinating on many levels: fact/fiction, hero/villian, history/legend, US/Mexico, etc. Believe it influenced my interest in fraud and successful… Show more Very much enjoyed the chance to study Spanish and Latin American literature. Doctorate Medicine

Activities and Societies: I was selected for a scholarship to do original bench research in neuroscience in my second (sophmore) year. We explored the role of the nucleus (brain center) in mammals that we thought was a fundamental "on-off" switch in the brain. We found it changed the overall activity of rats modestly. Our Rockford Campus of the University of Illinois College of Medicine had and still has an in depth focus on primary care. This experience with primary care, which included allowing me to have my own set of patients, provided me with a great opportunity to feel close to and responsible for the patients I saw in my training. In addition I was active in Obstetrics, Surgery, and other rotations allowing me as a student to appreciate my supervisors and they in turn were very active and in tune with who we were as students. I still stay in touch with one mentor, Jon Ferguson, who I admire greatly. We are exploring how we might compliment each other by caring for professional hockey players. Show less
