    Research Scientist at SINTEF Ocean

  • Education

    • University of California, Berkeley

      2009 - 2014
Bachelor of Science (BS) Environmental Science

Activities and Societies: Environmental Science Student Association, Innovative Design Bachelors thesis included acquiring funding (successful application for Sponsored Projects for Undergraduate Researchers grant), running experiments, and presentation of work at a conference.

    • University of Oxford

      2015 - 2017
Master of Science (M.Sc.) Zoology/Animal Biology

Used a hierarchical model to analyse longitudinal data. The final model was parameterized using multinomial logistic regressions to make predictions based on simulated environments.

    • Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

      2017 - 2021
Doctor of Philosophy - PhD Ecology

I was a member of the Center of Biodiversity Dynamics at NTNU (a Norwegian Center of Excellence). I worked on an international collaborative project with the CNRS in Montpellier, the French National Agency for Wildlife (OFB), and research groups in Lyon. My project focused on using long term data to model population dynamics. Results are used to inform both researchers in the form of peer reviewed publications, regulatory agencies, and the public in the form of press releases.

  • Experience

    • Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District

      Jun 2007 - Aug 2008
      Intern

Worked as part of a project aimed at rebuilding damaged habitat in the Riverside area through the reintroduction of native plant species and the removal of invasive species.

    • UC Berkeley

      Aug 2011 - Sept 2012

••Project was part of my senior thesis funded through a Sponsored Projects for Undergraduate Research. I found funding, designed and ran my experiment, conducted all data analysis, and presented my results at a symposium. Conducted lab work to support graduate student researchers and managed stores.

      • Undergraduate Researcher

        Jun 2012 - Sept 2012
      • Lab Assistant

        Aug 2011 - May 2012
    • University of California, Riverside

      May 2013 - Aug 2013
      Laboratory Technician

•Designed and ran experiments in the laboratory and the field. Managed and trained students and laboratory technicians from the private industry. Collaborated with researchers from the public and private sectors as well as academia.

    • USDA-ARS

      Feb 2014 - Aug 2014
      Student Researcher

Designed and ran experiments in the lab at the European Biological Control Laboratory focused to understanding the microevolution of parasitoid-host dynamics.

    • University of California, Riverside

      Aug 2014 - Jun 2015

Worked in collaboration with the University of Oxford to collect data as part of a long term capture-mark recapture project. Collected data in rugged terrain in the subtropical rainforest. Designed and ran experiments as part of a large biological control project. Also involved training and advising undergraduates.

      • Intern

        Mar 2015 - Jun 2015
      • Laboratory Assistant

        Aug 2014 - Mar 2015
    • AmeriCorps

      Jun 2015 - Sept 2015
      Resource Steward

Working as part of the U.S. Forest Service to collect data for the national forestry measurement act (NFMA) in order to make management decisions for timber sales.

    • NTNU

      Jan 2017 - Feb 2021
      Doctoral Student

This position entailed three years of research and one year of teaching. In my research, I:-Wrangled long-term data-Visualised and presenting data for both technical and non-scientific audiences-Modeled and performed analyses at all levels of complexity (examples include using Hidden Markov Models, multinomial logistic regressions, linear mixed model, non-linear mixed models, variance partitioning)My thesis included four papers (three first author published papers). My teaching experience included courses in:-Research design and methodology-Statistics and coding in R-Experts in teamworkI also participated in public outreach by writing opinion articles on scientific topics and conducting interviews with researchers. My pieces have been featured on the NTNU's Museum Blog and I have also collaborated on a piece on my research for a Norwegian news outlet (forskning.no) I also am committed to building relationships between teams. I led the organization of the 2019 NTNU Biology Department PhD retreat which involved organising professional workshops, seminars, speakers, and team building exercises. Show less

      Apr 2021 - Feb 2022
      Data Scientist

I worked in Cloud, Data, and Insights where I helped customers get the most out of their data. Using my specialization in ecological data, I led the development of the analytics component of a data platform aimed at collecting and using data on social and environmental sustainability. This offering was aimed at customers seeking guidance in complying with new regulations (e.g., EU taxonomy) to help define relevant sustainability KPIs and use predictive analytics to simulate "what if" scenarios (e.g., the effect of decreasing travel by 20% each year on overall carbon emissions). As a data scientist, I implemented models in diverse programming languages (e.g., Python; using packages such as pandas, numpy, and nltk) and on different platforms (e.g., Azure). In my role, I performed analytics, build machine learning models, and visualize results (e.g., Power BI). GitHub was the main tool for version control within my team. Experienced in end-to-end ML Ops machine learning pipeline development in Azure. Projects I have worked on involved:-Advisory on data governance-Data strategy development-Managing, compiling, and using data to report on GDPR/Schrems II compliance-Assisting in building a NLP (natural language processing) model-Time series analysis (ARIMA model) Show less
