  Undergraduate Research Summer Intern

  I conducted research for 8 weeks as a part of Uconn Health’s Biomedical Sciences Summer Internship Program, which aims to develop and prepare undergraduates with an interest in biomedical sciences for graduate school. I worked in a glial pathology lab focused on better understanding the pathology of Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy (GLD) and other similar demyelinating diseases. I worked with a MD/PhD student to design experiments aimed at better understanding one protein’s role in GLD, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1). I independently drove my own project forward, collected and analyzed data, and constructed a 250 word abstract to summarize my work. I delivered a 10 minute presentation to my peers and their principal investigators to share my findings and fielded questions. During this process, I gained experience in scientific writing, collaboration within a lab environment, managing my own project, public speaking, and various lab techniques like qPCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and glial cell culture.
