  My GIS Technician training commenced Sept 2015 when I secured a 4-month GIS internship with Eclipse Geomatics. Johanna Pfalz provided me with a basic introduction to GIS and expert guidance which I am deeply grateful for. During my internship Johanna gave me the opportunity to exercise and expand my pre-existing IT skills by requesting I install Linux Mint 16.2 operating system on her brand new out of the box MSI laptop; load and calibrate a complex augmented reality program (https://arsandbox.ucdavis.edu/) into the Linux environment; which I successfully accomplished.Another task I was assigned was to start redesigning a QGIS training manual she had on file. I spent some time researching QGIS documentation and was able to gain valuable knowledge pertaining to not only QGIS, but also Linux operating systems, MacOs. During this time I found QGIS to be most stable while running within a windows environment with MacOS being second and Linux rating poorly compared to windows. Show less

  GIS work experience opportunity with the Government of British Columbia. During this time I was challenged with a number of new and exciting GIS based problems and began to understand the significant range of abilities GIS possessed.During this internship with BCTS I was introduced to the extensive provincial databases and quickly learned about 'data management'. Some of my tasks involved joining multiple feature classes through merging and actually joining the attribute tables. One particular project I had was to combine three different stream feature classes together to become one, though the data from only one of the feature classes was to be maintained. The number of streams involved was well over 350,000 and the topology errors involved were in 80,000+. Due to having only a basic license on the ArcGIS software I did not have access to the automotive tools and had to correct the noted topology errors manually. Show less

  Throughout the past 4 months this co-op placement has been a treasure of experience and networking opportunities. The professionals that have been mentoring me have been patient, kind and generous with their knowledge. While here I’ve worked with cadastral spatial data I retrieved from NRCAN and other government sources to generate mapping projects based on land parcels, ownership and infrastructure inventory. I’ve gained extensive cartography skills also creating visually stimulating map projects for various Urban Systems Clients. Some of the projects required I use spatial joins, import data from csv files and kmz files. The skills us students were taught at Selkirk College have prepared me for this and I was able to approach each task with confidence. Using google also was a great resource, as any problem or issue I encountered, I would merely google and there would be 100’s of thousands of returns. Show less
