Many patients opted for traditional medicine immediately after the bite, explaining that allopathic healthcare options were often far away and underprepared (respondents found antivenom in only 13% of medical facilities visited). So, traditional medicine was seen as a way to survive the journey. This research highlights the continued neglect of snakebites, especially in low-income communities of tropical countries. Some experts may blame patients for what they see as "poor decision making" following the accident. I argue that these decisions are the result of structural failures to provide quality medical care in rural areas, and a failure to respectfully and adequately explain why traditional remedies do not work.
