      Sept 2018 - Jul 2019

In the role of Chair, alongside my fellow committee members I was responsible for organising and conducting weekly practical conservation events for students including: coppicing, invasive species removal, tree planting, canal grappling and litter picking. This involved working alongside various trusts and organisations such as the: Canal and River Trust, Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust, The Conservation Volunteers, Let’s Grow Together and other local park groups. Consequently, we supported a range of projects, including the Lapal Canal Trust and City Park for Brum, by petitioning and leafletting in the local area. Show less I was a member of a committee that promoted positive environmental decisions in regard to all aspects of the running of the student union. This position also involved organising the university’s annual ‘Go Green Week’ which included workshops with Refill, student litter picks, film screenings and a discussion panel that hosted Natalie Bennett, representatives from Climate Action West Midlands and Birmingham Friends of the Earth as well The Clean Kilo and Phil Jones Associates. As well as, leading the University's 'Fossil Free Campaign' which resulted in an open letter being signed by over 3000 students and faculty. Show less

Birmingham University Conservation Volunteers - Head Gardener

In 2019, I with other members of the BUCV helped to establish the only student garden on campus 'Grow with Joe'. The Head Gardener position was then created to assist with the annual maintenance of the project. In the position, I ran weekly events to teach student volunteers about horticulture and crop cultivation. Over the year we planted and harvested over 40 different types of fruits and vegetables and expanded the site to host a variety of diverse growing spaces including: a forest garden, no dig beds, micro apple orchard and cold frame. We also created a sensory garden in collaboration with the University's mental health and wellbeing services. Other responsibilities involved running a Twitter account that provided information about the garden (@Grow_with_Joe) and maintaining positive relations with the Estates Team to ensure continued university support of the project.
