      Jun 2009 - Jul 2009
      Department Researcher

      • Built up knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for use in the application of Field Flow Fractionation (FFF) of nanoparticles. The work was to see if an electric field could separate nanoparticles in a micro channel by particle size. I then took the work further by introducing different channel designs, which proved that the particles could be sent through different channels using a variable cross flow.• I also wrote a tutorial document on how to use the CFD software so that the work could be continued as a research project once I left. • Cadbury plc.

      Sept 2009 - Sept 2010
      Project/ Process Engineer

      • Planned and organised a three day trial of a new product (Wispa Duo). The trial identified that all three wrapping lines could be used instead of one, creating time for extra maintenance days and further production of other SKUs: a great cost saving for the company. I then managed the first full scale production and release of the product.• Developed knowledge using SAP from building a full functional location structure for a newly commissioned plant, utilising FMECA studies and producing maintenance plans to ensure all critical A equipment were covered. This was to reach the targets set by the company to reduce the amount of equipment breakdowns and raise the plants’ efficiency (OEE).• Working closely with contractor companies; producing mould damage assessments, redesigning outer identification units and reducing engineering downtime. • Atkins

      Sept 2012 - Dec 2017
      Reliability and Production Optimisation Consultant

Alex worked within the RAM & Production Optimisation Team in the Oil & Gas, Energy sector within Atkins. His main role is to manage and deliver extensive Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) studies at various stages in a systems’ life. He provides solutions to support critical decision making, such as identifying critical areas in designs, quantifying the true benefit of redundancy (thereby avoiding unnecessary capital expenditure) and developing sparing & maintenance or resource strategies to assess their effect on availability. The RAM analysis is carried out in the form of computational models which are developed to realistically represent the operational configuration of the systems, often preceded by a detailed Failure Mode, Effects & Criticality Assessment (FMECA).Alex is proficient in the use of RAMP (Atkins) and Availability Workbench (Isograph Ltd.), which both utilise the Monte Carlo computational algorithm for the assessment of the availability characteristics, taking into account operating and failure modes, duty cycles and support (spares and maintenance) policies. The algorithm relies on repeated random sampling from user defined input data distributions to compute an output. This method is often used when models are complex, non-linear, infeasible or impossible to compute an exact result by using a deterministic algorithm.Alex has carried out and managed projects in addition to facilitating kick-off meetings and data gathering workshops around the world, including: Baku, Azerbaijan; Calgary, Canada; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Glasgow, Scotland and has built strong relationships with the Clients in those countries. Projects include work for BP, ConocoPhillips, Dead Sea Preservation Government Company (DSPGC), Fluor, Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ), Single Buoy Moorings (SBM), SNC-Lavalin and WorleyParsons. Show less

    • Bring & Mix

      Nov 2014 - Jun 2021
      Director

Bring & Mix is a new and exciting pop-up that was incorporated in November 2014, and started trading in March 2014. The business is based on a Bring Your Own (BYO) model where guests bring their own spirits and receive two hours of cocktail service.Bring & Mix started life off in a small Cafe in Southampton during their closed hours; thereby utilising space that would otherwise be unused. This space-sharing relationship has provided Bring & Mix with a great central location, and provides the cafe with an additional revenue stream by utilising space that would not normally be generating any income. From the success of the Southampton venue, Bring & Mix has expanded into Winchester using the same tried and tested business model. The company has a strong social media presence and from the high quality of service that is provided, Bring & Mix is the Number 1 Nightlife Attraction in Southampton on Trip Advisor. The success of the business has been driven by both Directors (Alexander Holmes & Sara Stephens) who ran and managed the business on the side whilst having full time careers in their respective fields.Alexander and Sara exited the business in June 2021 to explore new and exciting opportunities. • A.m.a. Nuclear Ltd.

      Jun 2015 - Oct 2015
      T-RAM Engineer (secondment)

Alex was seconded from Atkins to a.m.a. Nuclear Ltd. (a joint venture comprising Areva, Mace and Atkins) as a T-RAM engineer on the Silos Direct-encapsulation Plant (SDP) Project. The project was design to process nuclear waste recovered from the Magnox Swarf Storage Silos at Sellafield and package it to make it ready for long term storage. The contract was worth up to £1.72 billion and was thought of vital strategic importance to the UK, Not only would it remove the risk and hazard presented by the silos, but also demonstrate the UK’s ability to decommission major historic plants, essential for underpinning any future new reactor builds in the UK.Alex's role within the team was primarily focussed on carrying out detailed Functional Failure Mode, Effects & Criticality Assessments (FMECA), Throughput, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (T-RAM) analysis, and Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM) studies.
