  Served with infantry in Iraq in 2006 and 2008-9 when activated from reservist status. Conducted combat operations with a mobile assault platoon in Fallujah, supervised Iraqi soldiers, led teams of marines on security duties, and earned several medals and ribbons for service.

Organized trips for students to visit art museums, galleries, a pottery village and printmaking workshops.
