  My role during this internship at the Marine and Storm Water Unit under The Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects was to assist the department with on going projects already in the pipeline. The following are the duties I was entrusted to carry out:● Sorted and organized files, spreadsheets, and reports.● Performed administrative duties and staff support tasks.● Worked on projects using knowledge gained in classes to put together recommendations on national issues.● Reviewed related literature and conducted investigations to support research efforts.● Searched at the library and in scholarly databases to locate necessary information for research projects.● Was tasked to conduct a solo minor research project to assess the role of Green Infrastructure and nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation.● Worked extensively in assisting colleagues on high-level national and EU level GIS projects such as The EU Sage Project.   My role is working towards the EU’s green deal targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. I’m currently involved in 2 projects one project is to investigate the energy potential the Maltese islands can generate from solar energy. The second project is spearheaded by the European Union called the Mediterranean Island Cleantech Innovation Ecosystem (MICIE). The aim of this project is to strengthen the contribution of research and innovation (R&I) in achieving the climate and energy targets of Cyprus and Malta as defined in their National Energy and Climate Plans.MICIE will achieve this by forging links across and within the two R&I ecosystems, leveraging each country’s strengths, and developing synergies to address challenges -ultimately catalyzing the development of innovative climate technologies and business models. As the Maltese project leader from EWA’s side, I am tasked with managing the Maltese stakeholders to effectively develop an R&I action plan and its template along with a guiding document documenting how to create them.Contributed to the update for the upcoming preliminary flood risk assessment:• Responsible to update Malta's flood risk maps to be reported in the EU's Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment update.• Responsible in constantly monitoring the installed flooding monitoring network.• Data validation and analysis of the flooding monitoring network data.   I was invited to present my research called “Coastal Flood Risks and the Business Community: Stakeholders’ Perception in Malta” at a two day international conference from the 19-20 June 2023 called “Climate Change Adaptation in the Coastal Built Environment” held at the University of Cantabria, Santander, Spain. Climate change significantly affects coastal regions due to their socioeconomic significance and the anticipated consequences of rising sea levels, more frequent extreme events, altering coastal dynamics, and shifts in temperature and precipitation patterns.Efficient climate change adaptation measures in the coastal built environment extend beyond physical and environmental considerations. They encompass socio-cultural, institutional, human capital, and economic aspects to ensure comprehensive and effective adaptation strategies.The high-level international symposium fostered debate and discussion regarding the effectiveness of a comprehensive approach to climate change adaptation in the built environment. It aimed to address challenges, develop policies, and share methods for climate change adaptation in coastal regions. The event facilitated knowledge exchange among researchers and practitioners, promoting multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral collaboration. Show less
