      Structural engineer

I started my career as a structural engineer with Hatch Associates in November 2009 out of their Brisbane office as a member of the Structural Assets Group. Over a 12 month period I gained experience in advanced structural analysis working on a variety of projects for both domestic and international clients. I worked on a number of projects which typically involved the assessment/design review of large bulk material handling machines. My responsibilities for these projects were to undertake structural modelling and assessment of various structural components using frame analysis packages and specialist finite element analysis software such as SPACE GASS and MSC.FEA. I assessed the structural adequacy of various machine components in accordance with Australian Standard AS 4324.1 or international standards (ISO 5049.1, FEM II) depending on the project location and specifications. I also gained experience in condition assessment of existing steel structures which complimented the advanced analysis experience mentioned above. A notable project involving both condition assessment and advanced analysis I was involved in was the fatigue assessment of a crane runway system for an aluminium smelter in Portland, Victoria. After moving from Brisbane to Gladstone in January 2011, I continued to work as a structural engineer for Hatch Associates. I undertook projects that involved assessment of existing structures such as transfer towers, pallet racking, equipment supports, pipe supports and access platforms. I also performed various design work which included the design of a new crane runway, shelter for process monitoring equipment, monorails and lifting devices including a portable lifting device to remove variable speed drives from substations.
