    • Flemish Commission for UNESCO

      Jan 2012 - Oct 2016
      Secretary-General

It is my job as Secretary-General to create a link between the academic/professional network within Flanders and UNESCO.What is the Flemish Commission for UNESCO?The National Belgian UNESCO Commission was founded on 12 February 1949. It fell under the competence of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and received a mandate to coordinate governmental and non-governmental activities with UNESCO. Today, this national commission does not exist any longer in the current Belgian federal state structure. As a result of the successive state reforms, most of UNESCO’s fields of action have become the competence of the Communities and the Regions. In Belgium, there are presently two independent UNESCO Commissions: the ‘Vlaamse Unesco Commissie’ (VUC), established in 2003, and the ‘Commission belge francophone et germanophone pour l'UNESCO’, established in 2006. The executive boards of both Commissions maintain excellent relations and there is a willingness to develop a strong synergy. The tasks of the Flemish UNESCO Commission include its role as a liaison between UNESCO and the Flemish Community in Belgium; providing of information to the public; giving advice to the government and to the policy-makers; inspiring and developing actions linking up with UNESCO’s objectives and goals. The Commission fulfills this mission regarding UNESCO as an organization within the United Nations as well as the Flemish government and the Flemish society in general. The Commission also closely cooperates with the Belgian Permanent Representative to UNESCO and with the Representation of the Flemish Government in France. For the execution of its tasks, the Commission can count on the know-how and enthusiasm of its members. Among these, one finds independent experts in the different fields of action of UNESCO, on the one hand, and officials from the Flemish administration departments dealing with UNESCO related issues, on the other.
