Same old story? African disease stereotypes persist in Covid-19 media coverage. This report delves into the period from March 2021 to March 2022, shedding light on how the Covid-19 pandemic was portrayed in the context of Africa.Methodology:Combining cutting-edge corpus linguistics tools and critical discourse analysis, this study conducted both quantitative and qualitative investigations into media narratives. Key Themes:🎯Narrative persistence: The study uncovered the persistence of detrimental historical disease frames within media reporting. These ingrained narratives often overshadow Africa's accomplishments in handling Covid-19.🎯Uniform representation: A noteworthy finding was the uniform representation of Africa, influenced by an over-reliance on quotes from Western leaders and experts. This homogenized portrayal shaped global perspectives on the continent's pandemic response.🎯Imbalance in perspective: The analysis revealed an imbalance in reporting, where African voices and viewpoints were underrepresented. This lack of diverse perspectives hindered a comprehensive understanding of the pandemic's impact.🎯Neglected local expertise: The minimal integration of local African sources and firsthand experiences marginalised the voices of those directly affected by the pandemic, perpetuating a lack of local agency in the narrative.🎯Limited government agency: The study highlighted a significant gap in attributing agency to African governments in managing the pandemic. External narratives often overshadowed local efforts and strategies.Implications and Recommendations:This research underscores the urgent need for a nuanced and balanced portrayal of Africa's Covid-19 experience in the media. By challenging entrenched narratives and promoting a diverse range of voices, we can cultivate fairer representations that acknowledge Africa's achievements, local expertise, and agency in handling complex challenges.
