      Community IPPE Rotation

This IPPE was 160 hours during the Spring 2017 semester of my PY1 year. During my experience here, I was responsible for typing up scripts that patients brought in, filling scripts for patients, and calling doctors for refill requests. In this community rotation, I learned many new things that helped me grow in my pharmacy career.Preceptor: Dr. Jesse Steffan, Pharm.D.

      Faculty Shadow

During this school required faculty shadow, I followed around my Infectious Disease professor. During this experience, I went on rounds with him and the fellow healthcare professionals. My professor showed me the charts he has to look over and what a typical day is like as a clinical pharmacist. He had to make sure that all the patients were on the best and optimal therapy for their particular ailment. This experience strengthened my desired to pursue a residency upon graduation.

      PY4 Shadow

During this school required shadow, I followed around a 4th year student who was on her APPE rotations. The student that I followed was in an Ambulatory Care clinic. During this experience, we filled out a CMR for the insurance company that listed all a patient's current medications. After this she showed me what a normal day is like while on APPE rotations: she expressed to me that they each get a list of patients that they need to know very well and be able to give their recommendation for treatment. This experience made me realize how much independence we get during our APPEs and it makes me look forward to all the things my future schooling has to offer. Show less

      PY2 IPPE Experience

This 40 hour IPPE for Temple Pharmacy is required to graduate. In this role, during my PY2 winter break I worked in an institutional setting and helped deliver medications and fill medication orders. In addition to this, I shadowed the intravenous pharmacist to learn how to prepare sterile medications as well as compounded various liquid medications such as magic mouthwash and sodium bicarbonate bottles. Although I do currently work in a hospital setting it was a very different experience from what I am used to. It showed me that there are some similar rules that every hospital must follow but there are still many differences throughout as well.Preceptor: George Ohene Show less

      PY3 Counseling IPPE Experience

During my required PY3 IPPE at Temple University Hospital, our focus was on smoking cessation in stroke patients in the Neuro ICU. We started with just smoking cessation but as the rotation progressed, we would assess all the medications the patient was on and make sure they were all appropriate. We performed medication reconciliations daily and made multiple interventions for the betterment of patient care. It was the first experience I had actually counseling real patients instead of in simulation labs that we had throughout pharmacy school. This rotation taught me that even though we were focused on smoking cessation, every patient must be looked at as a whole or you can miss some very important medication issues.Preceptors: Dr. Van Hellerslia, Pharm.D, BCPS, CACP. and Dr. Jennifer Andres, Pharm.D, BCPS Show less

      May 2019 - Jun 2019
      Pharmacy Extern

This was considered my 6 week Ambulatory Care rotation that is required through Temple Pharmacy School. This rotation was on a Navajo Indian Reservation where many people do not have running water or electricity. It brought about a new way of thinking for me due to their cultural beliefs as well as creative medication regimens to fit the patient's living situation. The main focus of this rotation included patient counseling, seeing patients in Diabetes Clinic and Pain Clinic, working with a provider to gain a thorough patient history prior to their appointment, and seeing patients in Anti-coagulant Clinic to adjust their warfarin based on their INR. In addition to this, I also wrote SOAP notes, presented a case presentation, created an inservice for the emergency department on the different anti-venoms Anavip and Crofab, helped to create an opioid withdrawal protocol for the Indian Health Service, and gave a final presentation to the Pharmacy department on new and emerging treatments for hyperkalemia. To say this experience was amazing is an understatement. It gave me such valuable information that I will use throughout my pharmacy career. Preceptor: Dr. Kali Autrey, Pharm.D, BCPS Show less

      Pharmacy Extern

This was considered my mandatory institutional rotation. I worked in an inpatient pharmacy in their Frankford location. I helped with various tasks such as filling patient specific medications as well as Pyxis fills. I shadowed the pharmacist on their daily duties as well as shadowed Dr. Lovenstein in the ICU once a week. I attended multiple meetinds including shortage meetings, P&T Formulary meetings, and medication safety meetings. Each day I would participate in medication reconciliation counseling or COPD inhaler counseling. My projects included a COPD overview to newly diagnosed patients and Fasenra Risk Assessment presented at the formulary meeting.Preceptor: Dr. Scott Lovenstein, Pharm.D. Show less

My inpatient clinical rotation took place at Temple Hospital on an Internal Medicine team. Daily, we would round with the team and in the afternoons we would work on patient education includin medication reconciliations, COPD counseling, anti-coagulant counseling, and discharge counseling. This rotation was my first real experience with rounding by myself and it only solidified my decision to continue on in my pursuit of residency. My projects included journal clubs, drug information questions, Naranjo Assessment, and an Inservice of a topic of my choice. Because I do have a love of infectious disease, I chose to present on the different treatment options of osteomyelitis. This topic was relevant especially with the new publication of the OVIVA trial. In addition to this, the medicine team we rounded with requested small, informal inservices to educate them on topics such as minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and opioid conversions.Preceptor: Dr. Lawrence Carey, Pharm.D Show less
