Urban Systemic Initiative Mentor Teacher/ Standards Coordinator

I was one of six individuals in the District appointed to the position of Urban Systemic Initiative Mentor Teacher. The position was created after the University of Texas at El Paso's El Paso Collaborative for Academic Excellence in partnership with the Socorro Independent School District received a 15 million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation designed to improve academic success from Kinder to College. The initial work conducted by the Urban Systemic Initiative was to develop rigorous standards before the state of Texas introduced its own state standards. This work associated with the USI, required the mentor teachers to offer extensive professional development to teachers and administrators in the areas of math, science, technology and data driven decision making. As pioneers in this work, I provided SMART Board Training, FOSS, and presented at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Conference held in Houston, TX. Show less

      Oct 1999 - now

I worked diligently with my leadership team to transform a school from low achieving to four consecutive years of Recognized by the State of Texas. During my tenure in this position, I was a mentor to several new administrators and was team leader for a group of six principals. I was appointed by General Superintendent, Michael Hinojosa to serve as Lead Principal for the W.W. Samuell High School Feeder Pattern. For two years during this supplemental role, I was charged with ensuring a coherent vertical articulation with research, staff development and I worked with the PTA Presidents to deliver a feeder pattern event. Show less My main role in this position was to lead the Comprehensive School Improvement Program (C-SIP) which provided technical assistance to schools classified as low performing and coaching to the principals of those schools. Our program had a 95% success rate in transforming schools from low performing to acceptable or recognized status. As a direct result of the work done in this role, I was recruited by an Assistant Superintendent to become principal at the elementary school in the District with the lowest mathematics scores. Show less I was directly responsible for Program Design and Professional Development for the DISD Bilingual and World Languages Dept. I was recruited to Dallas ISD as a result of my work in San Mateo County Office of Education. As Director of M-LEP I was instrumental in providing staff development to all teachers of ELL's with a shoestring staff and small budget. During my tenure as M-LEP Director I was invited to be an adjunct professor for El Centro Community College and was invited to speak at the Minnesota Reading Conference. Show less
