      HRB Student Summer Scholarship

The Health Research Board Summer Student Scholarships is for undergraduate students in a health or social care-related discipline to support their participation in research. The purpose of the student scholarships is to encourage an interest in research and to give the student an opportunity to become familiar with research techniques.I worked on the Food4Me project and was tasked with the examination of the relationship between dietary intake and finger prick omega 3 index in relation to genetic variation. This research aimed to establish baseline data of the Omega-3 status of the Irish cohort of the Food4Me study. It aimed to examine the correlation between dietary intake of Omega-3 and measured finger prick omega 3 index and to determine whether genetic profile had an impact on blood omega-3 index. This study determined total intake from both food and supplementation use, for all subjects upon entering the study. Finally this project examined how intakes were linked to known genetic variation, FADS1 rs174546, and how such genetic variations determine ability to change omega index, this was examined at all levels of intervention within the Food4Me project. I gained great experience in database creation, interpretation, and validation and also gained experience analysing data using SPSS.Food4Me website: http://food4me.org/about/about-the-food4me-projectDuring my time on the Food4Me project I was also involved in validating, updating and completing the food supplement database.
