GIS Ecologist - Urban environments and biodiversity

Research investigating the quantification of urbanisation gradients; the composition and distribution of plants and animals in urban landscapes, including plant extinction debts; and the role of biodiversity in creating green, healthy cities and towns. I am particularly interested in the spatio-temporal components of urbanisation, how these dynamics impact on the ecology of urban areas, and how we can use this knowledge to build green, healthy cities and towns, and conserve resilient ecological systems in areas where people live and work. Editorial Board Member, Landscape Ecology
    • National University of Singapore

      Jan 2015 - Jan 2016
Visiting Senior Fellow, School of Design and Environment

In both years I delivered LA 5301 GeoDesign, a two-week intensive course that was a core module for Masters of Landscape Architecture Students. This course introducesd students to ESRI’s ArcGIS spatial mapping and analysis software. Over the two week period, the students are immersed in hands-on activities that provide a basic introduction to the software, and how it can be integrated into the design process. Parallels are drawn between ArcGIS and other programs regularly used for design projects, including CAD, Illustrator and In Design, and the students are given opportunities to practice transporting files between programs. This allows students to explore how they might incorporate the use of ArcGIS in future projects. At the completion of the course, the students had gained valuable experience in using ArcGIS to address tasks relevant to landscape architecture, urban design and urban planning, and they accumulated greater insights into how to use ArcGIS to incorporate stronger ecological outcomes into their designs. As Director and Founder of Urban Ecology in Action, I am passionate about building better cities where people and nature co-exist. I bring my knowledge and expertise to help build healthier, more sustainable and resilient cities and towns. This information is critical to plan and manage urban areas in the face of changing climates and increasing human populations. I have extensive experience working with professionals from a broad range of disciplines. This includes local and state government, built environment professionals, development, industry, and other organisations. I work collaboratively to create innovative and strategic approaches to value-add to current practices, and add a point of difference to your building projects. I am committed to sharing cutting-edge knowledge, ideas and advice with engaged and interested audiences. I believe that by engaging and inviting as many people as possible to contribute and build capabilities with us, we can create cities that are more sustainable, resilient and liveable places for people and nature.
