Moreover they could have recently split from a metapopulation formed in conjunction with whales observed in the Canary Islands, because there is low genetic differentiation, little or no female-mediated gene migration between them and the lack of any recent bottleneck signal, suggesting that they should be… Show more At the southern Iberian Peninsula, killer whales that are observed off the Strait of Gibraltar are genetically, socially and ecologically different to other populations in the North Atlantic. Moreover they could have recently split from a metapopulation formed in conjunction with whales observed in the Canary Islands, because there is low genetic differentiation, little or no female-mediated gene migration between them and the lack of any recent bottleneck signal, suggesting that they should be considered as different management units and subpopulations. The subpopulation of killer whales of the Strait of Gibraltar consisted of 39 individuals in 2011. Their social associations were non-random and also temporally stable, resulting in a well differentiated social structure, organized into 5 pods (A1, A2, B, C and D). Their presence off southern Iberian Peninsula is clearly related with the migration of their main prey, bluefin tuna. Show less
