      Jul 2015 - Oct 2015
      Student Dietitian

This professional placement entailed three key areas of Dietetics; Clinical, Food Service and Public Health. Clinical: I spent 3 weeks with the Central PHO and 6 weeks with the dietetic team at Palmerston North Hospital. My time with the PHO was community orientated, seeing people with long term chronic conditions. I was involved in clinics, home visits and group education sessions, I delivered healthy eating and cardiac rehab group education sessions. While in the hospital I was able to get experience in a range of areas including surgical, renal, enteral feeding, pediatrics, general medical, rehab, orthopedic and outpatients. Food Service: I was tasked with developing a two week lunch menu cycle for the Palmerston North Hospital that aligned with their healthy eating policy. This involved recipe adaptations, recipe development and menu development while looking at cultural factors, budget and customer satisfaction. The outcome was delivered to the food service manager with favourable outcomes. The food service is currently implementing some ideas that were suggested. Public Health: I along with another student dietitian developed an evaluation form for evaluating smartphone apps. I then evaluated healthy lifestyle apps to identify suitable choices for Health Promoters to recommend to the public as a way for them to work towards their target of reducing obesity. Show less
