In my thesis (final academic project), I posited and argued that three Tragic Mulatta tales, Passing and Quicksand by Nella Larsen, and Plum Bun by Jessie R Fauset, are Heroic Mulatta tales. My main thesis was that through the publishing prowess and social salience of the Harlem Renaissance, a time of heightened artistic and social transgression and transformation, these stories leveraged the times, biographical and fictional narrative, and character de/construction to undermine the common tale that mixed-racedness is marginal and disempowered, and asserted that mixed-racedness by existence is transgressive, pervasive, and expansive. In my senior year of undergrad, I was the only Carleton student awarded the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. With it, I travelled for a year to 7 countries exploring the power of storytelling through spoken word. Throughout the year I blogged about my experience, research, and what I learned. Check it out below.
